Miles is a location-aware audio companion. Location is the input the product runs on, so this policy explains, in plain language, exactly what is collected, where it goes, and what is never collected.

The short version

What Miles collects and why

1. Location

While a tour is running, Miles uses your device's location (GPS) to choose which stories to tell and when. Location is:

If you turn location off, Miles cannot run a tour. We do not collect location while the app is closed or no tour is running.

2. A random device key and tour records

When you first use Miles, your device generates a random key (a string of letters and numbers — not connected to your name or identity). Our database stores, under that key:

We do not combine these records with information from other services to identify you, and we have no way to connect them to your name — we never collect it.

3. Information stored on your device

Miles stores data locally on your device (browser local storage and a local audio cache) so the app works quickly and remembers your tour: your device key, whether you've entered your tester code, your current session, the stories you've recently heard, and cached story audio. You can delete all of this at any time by clearing the app's / site's data in your browser or device settings. Doing so also resets your heard-history on that device.

4. Stories generated during your tour

Some stories are generated during a tour. When that happens, the place information involved (names and coordinates of public places near you — not information about you) is used to research and write the story, and the finished story may be added to the Miles story library for future tours. Your device key is not attached to library stories.

Service providers (where data goes)

Miles runs on a small number of service providers, which process data only to provide their service to us:

We do not disclose your information to anyone else except as required by law.

Retention

Diagnostic events and heard-history records are kept while Miles is in testing and development, so we can measure whether tours are improving, and are deleted or anonymized when no longer needed for that purpose. Library stories (Section 4 above) are product content, not personal information, and are kept as part of the library.

Your choices and rights

Children

Miles is a general-audience product and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; because Miles collects no names or contact information at all, no such collection is designed to occur. A parent or guardian who believes a child's information has been provided to us may contact us for deletion.

Security

Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Database access from the app is limited to inserting tour records and reading the story library and your own device's heard-history. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affecting your records occurs, we will provide notice as required by law.

Changes

If we change this policy materially — especially if we ever introduce accounts, advertising, or new categories of collection — we will post the updated version at this page with a new effective date before the change takes effect.
